Faulkner's distinctive narrative structures--the uses of multiple points of view and the inner psychological voices of the characters--in one of its most successful incarnations here in As I Lay Dying. In the story, the members of the Bundren family must take the body of Addie, matriarch of the family, to the town where Addie wanted to be buried. Along the way, we listen to each of the members on the macabre pilgrimage, while Faulkner heaps upon them various flavors of disaster. Contains the famous chapter completing the equation about mothers and fish--you'll see.

Review

“He is the greatest artist the South has produced. . . . Indeed, through his many novels and short stories, Faulkner fights out the moral problem which was repressed after the nineteenth century [yet] for all his concern with the South, Faulkner was actually seeking out the nature of man. Thus we must turn to him for that continuity of moral purpose which made for greatness of our classics.” —Ralph Ellison “No man ever put more of his heart and soul into the written word than did William Faulkner. If you want to know all you can about that heart and soul, the fiction where he put it is still right there.” —Eudora Welty

On my first reading, I enjoyed the second half of the book more than the first half. I was mystified by that so when I finished the book, I immediately went back to the first page and re-read the entire book. I discovered that's the best way to read Faulkner, at least for me. It is a remarkable book, and I was surprised to learn that it is one of his first. A masterpiece.

This was my first Faulkner novel and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to give Faulkner a try! While it is difficult initially to keep track of all the characters, a quick google search for a character list helped me keep everyone straight. Each chapter is written from a character's perspective and it does jump around some! This is a book you really have to pay attention to as you read, though, or you may find yourself quickly lost! I found this book to be a great intro to Faulkner's writing style and would recommend!

Simply one of the best novels written by anyone, anywhere. A simple story of no great length, told magnificently from many different viewpoints, with a control of language and a vivid evocative passion never quite equaled by any other writer in the English language. There is a reason that Faulkner got the Noble Prize for Literature in 1946, but don't let that get in the way of the sheer pleasure of watching Faulkner create a universe of multilayered dense complexity out of hard scrabble dirt poor lives.

This novel is considered an American Classic, and as such has been baffling and disturbing high school and college students for years. However, if you are not saddled with the burden of having to understand and actually make sense of it, it can be an entertaining and enjoyable study of human nature. The story is told from the point of view of many of the book's characters, even dead ones and those who not present for the scene they are describing. This lets the reader get into the heads of the different and often darn damaged and mighty messed up characters. The general gist of the story follows the varying reactions of the member of a dirt poor Mississippi family to the death of their wife and mother. Each bears their own scars from their painful upbringing, and each gets new scars during the course of the ordeal.

The book was a depressing story and difficult to read the first time, but after I read some study guides on the book I found it intriguing. One has to say this book is different from most. If you enjoy something unique and challenging, then I recommend this book. If you want some light reading for relaxation and entertainment, I do not recommend it.

Doesn't seem like his writing stlye . this book says it is corrected text. do not recommend corrected text.

Faulker creates an amazing southern world that you become engulfed in. The family itself has many secrets and surprising turns throughout it. The stream-of-conscious writing was a little difficult for me to follow, as well as the very subtle euphemisms, but the great characters and original thought made the book worth it. The family is very disoriented and twisted and it opened my mind to many questions that relate to life now like: Is the truth always right? Is honesty the best policy even if it hurts someone? Should someone be passive and unhappy or push for what they want and risk everything? How much do words matter? Are good intentions as valued as actions that portray them? This book opened my mind to countless possibilities and made me consider how everyone has a story to tell, sometimes its just hard to let it out. Faulker does an amazing job showing people the questions that life poses and writing it general. I would recommend this to anyone that wants insight and a good read.

I was supposed to read this book for a class. I have ADHD, so the POV style of writing, before developing the characters, is difficult for me to keep track of. The premise and the story are interesting, but I am only early into reading it.As I Lay Dying (Vintage International)
