I am a self taught software developer and I had some serious wholes in my knowledge when it came to architecturing large scale applications. I had of course come across disjointed articles here and there that covered some of the topics were are about to discuss, but this book simply does an incredible job of tying all together. It gave me the full picture and a much better intuition for how to tie backend concepts together.Every line of the book is packing knowledge and I felt many "aha" moments while reading it. Those who are newest to web development will be those who gain the most knowledge from reading it, but it is probably still quite good for intermediate and advanced people.
I wish my university had offered a course based on this book. I'm a junior developer in a corporate environment where we build cloud-based web apps, web services, message-driven components etc. It's all pretty new to me so I'm just learning as much as I can on the fly. This book really gave me the "big picture" of the systems that we are working on as our architecture shares many similarities to what is described in this book. I'm also studying some of the Amazon Web Services solution architect training and this book is a great complement to it. This book should be required reading for the dev teams at my work. But now I have a dilemma... should I share the book with my teammates or keep it to myself for a competitive edge? haha.
Absolutely fantastic book. Although written with scalability and startups in mind, the book presents the basic building blocks of modern large-scale, distributed systems. As someone who is looking to transition to such roles in the future, I recommend this book 100% because of the ease of reading, the invaluable tips for writing software in general and for using concrete examples as much as possible.
Great book & good read. Moves very fast. Opened up my mind on the challenges enterprise face and how its been addressed. The best part is, it handled those solution at abstract level and it helps to get the basics before deep dive on to individual products.
